Preservation for the Climate: How fixing your house can help the planet and your bottom line
Otsego 2000 will hold a workshop at the Earth Festival at Milford Central School, 42 West Main Street in Milford.
We may think of historic preservation as preserving a moment in time in architecture or a community’s development, but did you know that repairing and maintaining our historic buildings is also best for the planet’s future? Otsego 2000 executive director Ellen Pope will discuss how repairing, restoring, and reusing historic building materials is important to fighting climate change, and how homeowners in Otsego County’s 15 historic districts may qualify for New York State’s Historic Income Tax Credit for home repairs. We will also provide information on New York’s Historic Barn Rehabilitation Tax Credit for barns built before 1946, no National Register listing necessary.
Free workshop, please email to sign up. Walk-ins welcome. The Earth Festival runs from 9 am to 3 pm, and includes a recycling drop off. Otsego 2000 also is joining with other nonprofits to hold a Repair Café at the Earth Festival from 11 am to 2 pm.

Repair Café at the Earth Festival
As part of the Earth Festival at Milford Central School, there will be a Repair Café.
Bring a broken item, such as a lamp, small appliance, clothing, textile, jewelry, computers, or cellphones and volunteer repair expert coaches will evaluate and help to fix them free of charge. Materials needed to repair items available to purchase at cost. One item per person.
The Repair Café is a joint effort by The Arc Otsego, City of Oneonta Sustainability Committee, Otsego 2000, Otsego County Conservation Association, the Otsego Land Trust, and the Otsego ReUse Center.
