New Award for Emerging Filmmakers with ties to New York State
Glimmerglass Film Days, a film festival in Cooperstown, NY, invites submissions for the inaugural Hyde Bay Award for Emerging Filmmakers. Eligible filmmakers may submit documentary shorts (15 minutes or less) that reflect this year’s Film Days theme of Second Nature, and/or the broader Film Days goal of highlighting films that explore humanity's complex relationship with the natural world.
“We want to support emerging filmmakers with ties to New York State,” said Ellen Pope, executive director of Otsego 2000 which started the film festival in 2013. “We are very grateful to the donor who made this award possible and look forward to highlighting more emerging filmmakers at Glimmerglass Film Days.”
Pope noted that they define an emerging filmmaker as someone who has not had more than three short films screened at film festivals, and who has not yet released a feature-length film. Screenings at student film festivals do not qualify. Emerging filmmakers from or currently living in New York State are invited to apply as are emerging filmmakers whose shorts were filmed 50 percent or more in New York State.
Finalists will be selected by members of the Film Days Steering Committee: Xander Moffat, independent producer and Film Days programmer and technical director; Peter Hutchison, award-winning filmmaker, bestselling author, educator, and activist; and JoAnn Gardner, a strong advocate for the importance of film in the classroom, who has worked on a number of commercials, movies, and television shows.
Up to three finalists will be selected. Each finalist will receive a pass to attend the 14th season of Glimmerglass Film Days, November 11-15 in Cooperstown, NY. Finalists also will receive travel assistance and accommodations. The finalists will have their films shown at Film Days and participate in a Q&A with the audience. The winner will be announced at Film Days after the Q&A.
The Hyde Bay Award for Emerging Filmmakers is made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor and film enthusiast.
