Tour Middlefield on October 5

As part of its Historic Preservation Series, Otsego 2000 will offer a walking tour of Middlefield on Sunday, October 5 at 3 pm.

“Hamlets like Middlefield take us back to a time when land uses were more integrated, and people lived, worked, shopped, learned, and worshiped at places all within walking distance from one another,” said Dr. Cindy Falk, who will lead the tour. “When planners today think about new urbanism, they are using old places like Middlefield as their models.” Dr. Falk is Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies at SUNY Oneonta and Professor of Material Culture at the University’s Cooperstown Graduate Program.

The cost for the walking tour is $10. Register in advance at otsego2000.org or by calling 607/547-8881. This walking tour was researched and developed by students Conor Brandt and Justin Maroney in Dr. Falk’s Historic Preservation class at the Cooperstown Graduate Program. The Otsego 2000 Historic Preservation Series will continue with a walking tour in Cooperstown on November 16, held in conjunction with Glimmerglass Film Days.

Participants should meet at the Town of Middlefield Historical Association, which is located in the Old District No. 1 Schoolhouse on County Highway 35 in Middlefield.

Dr. Falk was co-editor of Buildings & Landscapes: The Journal of the Vernacular Architecture Forum for five years and is the author of Barns of New York: Rural Architecture of the Empire State.
